Ibm Thinkpad A31 Thread Sound Drivers
I just reloaded a ThinkPad A30. I do have the original IBM recovery CDs that came with W2K however they didn't work (odd, b/c they were still factory sealed.). I used a box copy of Win2K Prof, downloaded all relevant drivers from & let MS updates install a few as well. The system is now good to go (Win2K SP4, ALL available MS updates installed) except for audio.
I've got no sound!!- I tried every version of the audio drivers posted on the site thinking there may have been a mixup somewhere along the way - no luck.- In Device Manager under Other Devices I have PCI Device listed with no decent information pointing to what driver it wants.- I booted in to Safe Mode and the same thing was listed under Other Devices so I'm ruling out an application causing the unknown device. (but since I have no sound I didn't really think it was anything other than the audio driver anyway.)- In msinfo32ComponentsProblem Devices I have the following listed:Device PNP Device ID Error CodePCI Device PCIVEN8086&DEV2483&SUBSYS02201014&REV013&61AAA01&0&FB 1Help! What is your full 7 character Model-Type number (ie. XXXX-XXX) from the bottom of the system.2. Do you know the full history of the machine? Has the system board been replaced?3. Did you completely format your hard drive, prior to using the recovery disks? The instructions don't tell you that, but it is a critical factor.4. If you continue to use your box version of Win2K, try using to read your system to tell you EXACTLY what parts are attached to your system.

I just dropped them in & booted. (Have to say, I'm a Dell girl & that's how they roll so I assumed this would be the same.) If reformatting the drive is necessary then that certainly explains why the recovery disks didn't work out of the package. One mystery solved!4. If you continue to use your box version of Win2K, try using Belarc Advisor to read your system to tell you EXACTLY what parts are attached to your system.

The only thing I can think of at this point is that these ARE the correct drivers & the sound card just isn't working - as in hardware failure. As for the unknown device in Device Mgr maybe that's a completely separate device.?Thanks for responding! This is such a thorn in my side. I don't know if I should laugh or cry. Yes, the mute button was on. I KNEW this was a tech support 101 problem. I feel like a complete idiot. Why in the world doesn't it appear as muted in the system tray icon?!?!

Although I scoured the Belarc results the other day and didn't see anything I clearly had my 'stupid' glasses on so I just re-ran it. No, still not seeing anything listed there that isn't in Dev Mgr. You know, I'm going to run thru the driver list on the web site again & just install everything that is 'leftover' - as in NOT video, NIC, audio, etc.
I thought I did that already but considering the audio problem who knows.I'll keep you posted and again, thanks for your time on this.
